ZLF celebrates its jubilee: 125. Bavarian Central Agricultural Festival

Munich (bbv) – 2012 will especially also be marked by the 125. Bavarian Central Agricultural Festival (ZLF) - a jubilee festival.
On October 9, 1810 King Max granted several land owners and friends of agriculture the highest authorization of establishing an agricultural association in Bavaria. In 1811 this association organized the first national festival in remembrance of the wedding with Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen that took place one year ago: The Bavarian Central Agricultural Festival was born.
From that time the Bavarian Central Agricultural Festival has been held 124 times. Since 1949, when the first festival after the war was held, it has been organized by the Bavarian Farmers Association. As the festival now takes place every four years, the jubilee falls slightly out of the timeframe: the 125. Bavarian Central Agricultural Festival takes place 201 years instead of 200 years after the initial festival, namely from September 22 to 30, 2012. The location is still the same, i.e. the Theresienwiese in Munich, it is only smaller due to the Oktoberfest, the “sister festival”.
The theme of the jubilee festival is “Agriculture as centre of life“. A reproduction of a globe that can be walked through will be installed at the centre and is to symbolize the global importance of agriculture and forestry as well as food industry. The ground floor of the globe will show what ”efficient, innovative and sustainable agriculture“ means. In the 1. floor of the globe we will for the first time welcome the Welthungerhilfe (World Hunger Aid) as guest on the Bavarian Central Agricultural Festival. The Welthungerhilfe will presumably ask for support of a particular project in a developing country.
At the same time the latest developments in the field of renewable energies, quality assurance of our food and the theme „seasonal - regional - global“ are central issues of the festival. Thus, to the outside world the performance of our agriculture and forestry shall be promoted, the prejudices against modern agriculture shall be overcome and the sense of responsibility of our farmers towards consumers as well as towards the environment also with respect to global nutrition and global climate change shall be signalized. Inwards it shall be made clear to the farmers and their families that they can be self-confident and proud of their productivity and willingness to perform.
Again a large animal tent with shows in the large arena will be a particular attraction at the 125. Bavarian Central Agricultural Festival. We want to take up again the famous horse race that took place on the occasion of the wedding of the Bavarian crown prince Ludwig and Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen in the year 1810.
Two social evening events will additionally enrich the anniversary festival: a party of the rural youth organisation as already in 2008 and, for the first time, a farmer ball in the marquee.
Following a break of several years, the Bayerische Sparkassenverband (Bavarian Association of Savings Banks) will again hold a Savings Bank Day for the agricultural customers of the savings banks in Bavaria. The ZLF 2012 will occupy an area of 120,000 qm. We expect again approximately 650 exhibitors - and according to the current registrations we can already predict one thing: the area will not be large enough so as to satisfy all demands.
